Testing the escalator

Kneeling carefully at the threshold, Kevin snatched up a fallen stick from nearby undergrowth. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed it onto the moving escalator. The stick rattled loudly as it bounced across metal steps, then slowly descended until swallowed completely by the black void. Nothing unusual occurred—no spark, no reaction, no sudden noise. The escalator simply carried on. Kevin’s pulse throbbed. “This is insane,” he muttered, edging closer, curiosity and fear clashing violently.
