An unexpected noise

From far below came a sound. It floated upward faint but clear, carried along the tiled passageway. Kevin stiffened instantly, his ears straining. It wasn’t the mechanical hum this time—it was different. Something alive. Footsteps maybe, or scraping against concrete, unmistakably organic. His breath hitched, throat tightening as adrenaline surged. He leaned dangerously forward, squinting past the dim glow. Beyond the escalator’s light, nothing stirred. Then silence again. The noise evaporated, leaving only oppressive stillness.
