Losing the phone

The phone slipped, clattering against metal before landing on the moving steps. “No!” Kevin shouted, lunging, but too late. His glowing lifeline descended steadily, casting pale light into the abyss. He watched helplessly as it shrank smaller and smaller until the glow vanished completely. His stomach twisted in dread. Panic overtook him, knowing his only connection to the outside world was gone.
