Kevin clenched his fists, nails biting his palms. He couldn’t abandon the phone—it held his life. Terror battled with desperation, and desperation won. With a shaky breath, he stepped onto the escalator. The machine carried him downward relentlessly. Above, sunlight shrank until it disappeared. Shadows swallowed him whole as he descended into the humming dark, toward whatever waited unseen below.
