Into the unknown

The descent stretched endlessly. Kevin’s pulse throbbed louder than the escalator’s hum. Grimy tiled walls pressed close, cracked and streaked with mold. Every few meters, a fluorescent tube flickered, casting uneven patches of light. Shadows twisted unnervingly with each flicker. Kevin clutched the steel railing, terrified the machine might stop or worse—something could appear suddenly from the oppressive darkness below.
