Calm yourself

At last his arms gave out. He collapsed against the wall, chest heaving, sweat dripping. His breaths came uneven, loud in the stifling dark. He shut his eyes tight, forcing calm.
“Breathe,” he whispered, steadying himself. If panic consumed him now, there’d be no way forward. Slowly, deliberately, he forced control back into his trembling body.
