Questioning motives

The captain’s explanation grew sharper. “We fishermen have reasons to hate that thing. Our anger makes us suspect. Outsiders are believed.” Bob narrowed his eyes, curious. “Why do you hate it so much? What exactly has it done to you?” His voice carried skepticism. The captain’s lips pressed into a thin line, offering only a grunt instead of words. Silence stretched heavy across the boat, broken only by the steady chop of the waves.
