The sound came as a splash, not far from where the tide met the sand. It was quick, sharp, like something heavy dropped into water. Megan froze, tilting her head. “Did you hear that?” she asked softly. Bob nodded, eyes narrowing as he scanned the waterline. Yet all they saw was calm ocean surface stretching endlessly, nothing breaking it. No swimmers, no boats, not even a seabird diving. The scene looked completely still, almost staged.
