Megan’s throat tightened painfully as the truth struck her. She glanced toward the shadow moving below, understanding at last. “She wasn’t warning us off for nothing,” Megan whispered. Her voice trembled with sorrow. “She’s been fighting to protect her family. And we’ve been too blind to see it.” The words cut deeper than accusation. They were realization, shared silently by every hardened man aboard. They had mistaken grief for malice, and paid the price.
