Starting the journey

Later that morning, Tom tossed a duffel bag into the passenger seat and pulled out of his driveway, leaving the familiar streets of San Antonio and his home behind. The highway stretched long ahead, lined with mesquite trees and scrubland. His thoughts wandered as the city gave way to open space. Why a trailer? Why this? His father never once mentioned it—not in words, not even in passing.
