Toward the noise

The scratching intensified the further she crept down the hall. At the very end stood a door she rarely used—the narrow storage room against the back wall. Her hand hovered over the knob, hesitant, her chest tight with nerves. Then it came again: a bark, louder now, insistent, impossible to ignore. Summoning her courage, Judy twisted the handle and pushed the door open, bracing herself for whatever lay hidden in the darkened room beyond.
