Bruno barked sharply, snapping Judy from her spiral. She looked at the dangling cable, then forced the hatch shut again. Anger hadn’t arrived yet—confusion and determination outweighed it. Someone had stolen from her, yes, but she sensed more. This couldn’t be isolated. The line stretched into the sea, but Judy’s instincts told her the first answers weren’t offshore. They might still be hidden closer, among the neighboring houses that stood silently beside hers.
