Following the line

Judy walked closer to the water’s edge, using the horizon as her guide. She drew an imaginary straight line from the sea directly toward her home. The thought chilled her. Standing in front of her neighbor’s house, she did the same—envisioning the same invisible path cutting through the sand. “If the pattern holds,” she murmured, “the cable must be here too.” Bruno sniffed eagerly, as though confirming her silent reasoning with his restless energy.
