Into open water

The boat’s motor rumbled to life as Pete eased it away from the dock. The wooden planks and shore slipped behind them, the houses shrinking to tiny dots against the distant line of coast. The open water stretched endlessly ahead, waves rocking in steady rhythm. Pete kept one hand steady on the wheel, his eyes fixed forward, though suspicion flickered across his face. Finally, he asked, “So, where exactly are we going, anyway?”
