Feeling a change

The boat jolted suddenly, though no wave had struck. Judy braced herself instinctively, her hand gripping the railing. She felt the change before she saw it. The water resisted their progress, as if the hull had entered a heavy, unseen current. She leaned over the side, squinting at the sea. There, just beyond the wake, a strange sheen shimmered across the surface, spreading wider with every second. It rippled unnaturally, unsettling in its appearance.
