Surface shimmer

At first, the strange slick looked faint, like a thin film of oil catching the light. But quickly it thickened, growing darker and heavier in appearance. The blue of the ocean dulled into a sickly silver-green, swirling beneath the boat in uneasy patterns. The surface seemed alive, restless, infected by something unnatural. Judy’s chest tightened as she stared. This wasn’t something the sea produced on its own. Something foreign had disturbed these waters.
