They descended quickly, climbing down the swaying ladder until their boots hit the boat again. Neither spoke. The tension lingered, heavy and sharp. Pete started the engine, and the boat pulled away, churning water in its wake. The platform loomed behind them, humming endlessly, until distance reduced it to a shrinking shadow. Only then did Pete let out a long breath, shoulders sagging with relief. For the first time, they were safely away.
