Breaking his routine

For Luke, mornings were always a time of calm before the real work began. He tied knots, adjusted nets, and glanced occasionally at the shoreline as waves lapped steadily against his boat. About fifty minutes into this routine, however, something caught his eye. At first, he thought it was just another odd patch of stones, but then he leaned forward sharply. “What the hell is that?” he muttered, staring toward a black-streaked section of beach.
