Hard road ahead

The survivors gathered nervously as Luke and Edwin demonstrated, passing the regulator back and forth. Then, one by one, they gripped the beam, its bulk floating just enough to support them. Hearts pounding, lungs burning with each exchange, they kicked together toward the crevice’s exit. Every meter felt longer than the last. Darkness pressed around them, but still they swam, clinging desperately to the fragile promise of escape.
