The current tugged at them, but they pressed harder, sharing air in tense, silent rhythm. The beam bobbed, straining under their grip as bubbles streamed upward. Then, faint at first, a glow appeared above—the shimmer of daylight filtering through the water. Relief surged, fueling their legs. And then, suddenly, they broke through the surface. Cold sunlight poured over them, dazzling their eyes as they gasped in the open air.
