Muffled thud

Ben had always been a light sleeper, but something very unusual dragged him from his dreams that night. It started out with a muffled thud echoing faintly throughout his home, like a dull hammer against wood. The sound seemed to come from the ground floor, perhaps from his garden. It slightly caused Ben’s eyes to open, but it wasn’t enough to jolt him awake fully. That part came next, when the noise repeated—louder this time, and harder to ignore.
