After a short break, they tackled it together. One by one, then in clusters, they transported the eggs from under the porch. Each trip felt heavier, though the eggs were light.
Ben counted as they went, his stomach tightening. By the time the final crate was carried in, the tally was complete: 1,052 eggs. Each one nestled now in the fragile sanctuary they had built.
