First crack

Ben froze, eyes locked on one egg in particular. A jagged line split its pale surface, thin at first but unmistakable. His body tensed, blood roaring in his ears.
Slowly, the crack spread, widening with each faint push from within. The shell trembled, something pressing against it. Ben’s knees felt weak, yet he inched closer. After days of waiting, it was happening right before him.
