Scanning the area

Ben walked across the damp grass, scanning the shadows that pooled between trees and outbuildings. The cool night air was still except for the faint rustle of leaves overhead. His eyes moved over every dark corner, searching for movement, ears straining for sounds. But after several slow minutes of circling the garden, he found nothing. The animals had quieted again, and the strange thuds had stopped altogether. It was almost too quiet now, which made him uneasy.
