Not alone

Her shoes scuffed softly on the steps, each creak echoing. Halfway up, a noise froze her—footsteps, slow and deliberate. She turned, expecting people.
Instead, seven familiar figures padded upward. The dogs. Their eyes calm, tails wagging, they climbed as though they belonged. Abby’s breath caught. They hadn’t abandoned her—they were following her faithfully into the darkness.
