They turned toward the group standing nearby. David lifted his voice awkwardly, raising Julia’s hand so all could see the ring. “Thank you,” he said with a grin. “We really appreciate you sharing this moment.”
Julia, still beaming, waved, adding, “It’s the happiest day of my life!” They expected claps and smiles. Instead, the crowd’s eyes remained fixed, staring past them.
