From a distance, some assumed it was just debris carried in by the tide. Maybe a fishing net, or even part of a capsized vessel floating by.
Yet the object looked too round, too smooth. Its pale blue color caught everyone’s eye, standing out sharply against the darker water around it as it drifted nearer.
