She called her mother that afternoon, explaining everything. There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Her mother’s voice was thin when she finally spoke. “Are you sure about this?” she asked. Emily said yes. “You always did jump in headfirst,” her mother replied, but she didn’t say more.
