That evening, as she folded the blanket, something crinkled. Emily found a slip of paper sewn into the lining. Her hands shook as she pulled it free and unfolded it. The writing was rushed, just three words: “Keep him safe. Please.” It was unsigned. Emily stared at it, trying to imagine the mother who had written it.
