The next day, a caseworker arrived unannounced. She walked through Emily’s apartment, peering into rooms and opening cupboards. “We just want what’s best for the child,” she said. Emily nodded, answering each question calmly, but inside she felt a knot tightening. The visit ended with no complaints, but the warning was clear: any mistake, and Leo would be gone.
