They carried it up the beach, placing it on a flat rock away from the rising tide. The three men gathered around as Kenji tried to pry it open. The clasps were stiff but eventually gave way. A rush of stale air escaped, carrying the faintest scent of oil and seaweed. Whatever was inside had been untouched for decades—maybe even longer.
