Breaking Through
He burst from the surface, coughing hard, the lantern clutched against his chest. Rain fell in thin sheets, the sky gray and endless. He floated on his back, staring upward, the faint hum still echoing in his ears. Somewhere beneath him, that golden glow faded—finally at peace.
