One inspector crouched by the muddy patch. “You’ve dug deep, Mr. Parker. May we ask what this is?” Alan forced a calm tone. “A drainage fix. Old pipes collapsed.”
The man peered closer. “That’s not PVC down there.” Alan said nothing. He felt every pair of eyes in the neighborhood watching.
