The next day, Alan took out the trash and caught Paul waiting near the fence line. “Late project?” Paul asked with a grin. Alan forced a small smile. “Just fixing drainage.”
It wasn’t true, but easier than explaining. He walked back toward the shed, hoping the conversation would end there.
