Hellbenders are the largest aquatic salamanders in North America, which, as adults, can reach up to a whopping two feet long. Their presence is considered an indicating factor in assessing the health of freshwater ecosystems. Moreover, they lay their eggs deep in the water, unlike frogs that usually attach their spawn to vegetation near the edge of a body of water. These hidden habits of the species had eluded John’s knowledge.
