Inside the ship’s hold, amongst the expected debris of a life at sea; tangled wiry cobwebs, a thick layer of sea muck, fragments of broken wood, and dull old furnishings, the team found something that was wildly out of place – a gilded treasure chest, looking disconcertingly pristine against the ship’s timeworn interiors. It was an image straight out of a pirate tale, a sight so surreal, it almost seemed staged.
