
All signs pointed towards an extraordinary natural phenomenon – Antlions! The name might evoke images of strange mythical creatures, but antlions are very much real and extraordinary in their own right. “They are remarkable insect predators,” Bob explained, “which spend much of their lives in larval stage. During this stage, they dig conical pits in sandy or loose soil and wait to entrap small arthropods, like ants.”
