Back on shore, suits dripping, they traded theories. Old foundations, a forming sinkhole, a lost dock anchor, maybe leftover construction. Yet the remote lake had little history of heavy work, and no debris nearby. Nothing explained such crisp geometry in soft sand at all in that bay they could trust.
