Ghost nets, once thought to simply be a nuisance to larger vessels, have emerged as a significant threat to marine ecosystems in recent years. The World Animal Protection reports estimate approximately 640,000 tons of fishing gear ends up in our oceans each year—being lost, abandoned, or discarded. This gear then continues to catch marine wildlife, often leading to their slow and painful death.
